You may drive with your foreign European licence if:
- Your licence is valid
- You have reached the minimum age required to drive in France (i.e. 18 years old).
- You are not subject to a driving suspension in the country that issued this licence.
- You did not obtain this licence during a period when you were prohibited from applying for or obtaining a driving licence in France.
- Your licence is valid
Exchanging a foreign driving licence (EU/EEA) is mandatory in certain cases:
- You have committed an offence in France resulting in the suspension, restriction, withdrawal or cancellation of your driving licence or the loss of points.
- The foreign licence was issued in exchange for a licence issued in a country outside the EU and the EEA with which France has not concluded a reciprocal agreement (see the list of these countries below). In this case, you will only be able to use your foreign driving licence for one year from the date on which you took up normal residence in France.
- If you are in one of these situations, you have one year from the date of your arrival in France to apply to the prefecture or sub-prefecture of your place of residence to exchange your foreign driving licence for a French driving licence.
- The conditions for the exchange are the same as those set out above for driving in France with a foreign licence.
- Please note that for certain categories of licences, a medical examination is mandatory.
-
After this one-year period, no exchanges will be possible and you will have to retake the theoretical and practical tests for the French driving licence.
